This set provides a rugged, self‐contained system for demonstrating and using a fibre optics data transmission
The transmitter offers a choice of modulation – a variable frequency audio tone and a 250 kHz square wave for speed of light investigations
The receiver contains a user variable gain amplifier with integral loudspeaker as well as direct monitoring sockets for an oscilloscope
The fibre optics system is completed with 5m and 20m sheathed polymer optical fibre coils terminated with clip housings to mate with the transmitter and receiver units
The wavelength used is in the visible red part of the spectrum and with the modulation set at 1 Hz the pulsing beam can be easily seen so that the fibre optic principle can easily be demonstrated
This apparatus allows students to explore many aspects of fibre‐optics starting from the physical principles involved to applications such as data transmission
There is provision to use the apparatus to measure the speed of light through the fibre provided that adequate electronics facilities are available
